Interior painting: a practical guide

Wall preparation, choice of finish, number of coats: the secrets of beautiful, lasting interior paint.

Preparation is everything

Most of the result depends on preparation. Paint applied on a dusty or cracked wall will not last.

  • Cleaning: wash the walls to remove grease and dust.
  • Filling: fill cracks and holes with filler.
  • Sanding: sand the filled areas for an even surface.

Choosing the finish

  • Matt: hides wall defects. Ideal for bedrooms and living rooms.
  • Satin: easy to clean, slightly glossy. Perfect for corridors and living areas.
  • Gloss: very hard-wearing, but it shows every defect. Best kept for woodwork and details.

Coverage and coats

  • Coverage: count about 10 m² per litre per coat, depending on how porous the wall is.
  • Coats: two coats are usually needed, after a primer on a new wall.

UTES practical tips

  • Use good masking tape for clean edges.
  • Avoid painting in very humid weather: drying takes longer.
  • Work from top to bottom to avoid roller marks.

Good paintwork changes the feel of a room and adds value to your property.
