Electrical safety at home

Breaker panel, earthing, signs of wear: spot the dangers in your installation before an accident happens.

The breaker panel, your first protection

The panel cuts the power when there is a fault. Check its condition.

  • Breakers: their rating must match the cable size. An oversized breaker does not protect the wires.
  • RCDs: essential to protect people (bathroom, kitchen). Test them regularly with the « Test » button.

Earthing

Earthing carries away leakage current. Without it, a faulty appliance can electrocute its user.

  • Sign of missing earth: small shocks when touching a fridge or a washing machine.
  • Why it matters: it also protects electronics (computers, TVs) against lightning.

Signs of a dangerous installation

  • Blackened sockets: a sign of overheating (bad contact). Replace them right away.
  • Exposed wires: hanging or bare wires are a fire risk.
  • Burning smell: never ignore it near a socket or the panel.

UTES practical tips

  • Do not overload power strips.
  • Have your installation checked at least every 5 years.
  • Choose breakers from recognised brands.

Electrical safety is invisible but vital: prevention always costs less than repair.
